Medhas, the sage who is one of the central characters in The Devi Mahatmya, helps to raise the awareness of the king (suratha) and merchant (Samadhi) from an ordinary, worldly awareness to a higher, spiritual awareness of The Divine Mother, The Supreme Self. This is what happens finally, when at the end of the narrative of The Devi Mahatmya, the king and the merchant are fully inspired to seek The Divine Mother.
